Naples and Pompei, Italy -- Interactive Map Traces Day 7 Of PixTraveler's 2014 Mediterrain Cruise
This tells the story of our excursion to the ruins of ancient Pompei, Italy which we took on Tuesday October 21, 2014. We started from our ship which was docked in Naples and arrived (along with a few other tourists!) outside the walls of the city. Our guide allowed a few minutes for retail therapy and I bough a beautiful cameo with a floral design. The walking tour was over rough cobblestones and fairly long. Except for the steep ramp into the entrance gate the route was mostly level. I was impressed by the size of the city. It was much larger than the Roman trading down of Ephesus in Turkey, which on due consideration is not unexpected. Most of the buildings have stone walls and are joined together with no alleys or spaces between buildings. The quality of the Google Earth satellite imagery for Pompei is fantastic. You can zoom in very close to see what I mean about the street layout.
I was a bit disappointed that most of the color in the city is gone. It was reduced to a dull grey by the ashes and the ravages of time. There are a few places, such as the interior of the Terne Stabiane, the Stabian Baths, which was somewhat protected, that hint at the original beauty of the city. The most impressive part of the city was the main square, the Forum. I also enjoyed the buildings and grounds near the Casa Del Fauno, which was the palatial home of a rich citizen. The grounds have been restored to their original condition and give a bit of color to the area.
Please enjoy this album. I have attempted, in the Guided Tour, to show the detailed route of our tour including the street names. I used the printed tourist map to locate details not available from Google Earth. If you have a printed map, it will help you follow the route. I have also added photo numbers so you can locate the pictures associated with each step.
