Corfu, Greece -- Interactive Map Traces Day 5 of PixTraveler's 2014 Mediterrain Cruise

This is the story the story of our excursion to Corfu. I used excellent website The Ultimate Travelers Guide to the Island of Corfu for additional information about our visit. Corfu is an island just south of the Albanian border. We docked in the channel between the island and the Greek mainland. Our excursion bus crossed the island over a windy, narrow mountain road. We passed through several villages and stoped at the Golden Fox Taverna which has a spectacular view of Paleokasiritsa Bay in the sunny Ionian Sea, which extends west to the southern tip of Italy and Sicily. We completed the island loop returning through Makrades, Troumpetas, Skripero, and other small villages. Everywhere there were beautiful vistas and land sprinkled with lemon trees and over four million olive trees. Back in the the town of Corfu we passed the Paleo Frourio (Old Fortress) and the Palace of St. Michael and St. George. The fortress was built built during the Venetian era (1402-1797). The palace was built at the times of British domination in the island between 1814-24. We then left port heading for Naples, Italy. On the way, we stopped to help rescue a group of Syrian refugees stranded on a small boat. They were eventually picked up by the Italian Coast Guard.

[25:50] Syrian Refugees -- At about 5:00 AM our ship stopped near a large group of Syrian refugees whose small boat was dead in the water. To be sure they were safe, we waited till the Italian Coast Guard arrived at about 10:15 AM to rescue them. Then the Coast Guard sunk their boat! We have to be thankful to live in a place where we and our families are safe.

For fun and to show some other features of the map, I have analyzed the details of this event. I opened the map file in Google Earth and displayed the profile of the track segment that started at 4:00 AM. See this Tutorial for the procedure. At 4:49 AM when we were at 38° 39.703' lat and 18° 22.997' lon there was a decrease in speed from 15 to 13 mph. I believe this is the point where we sighted the boat which was about 1.5 miles away. At 5:05 AM, about 4.6 miles beyond that point when we were at 38° 37.492' lat and 18° 19.175' lon we made a turn that reversed our direction. We stopped near the boat at 5:32 AM when we were at 38° 38.559' lat and 18° 22.442' lon. As fate would have it, the GPS battery ran out at exactly this point! Drat! But, fortunately I was able to record the details of the beginning of the event.
