Day 24 Thumbnail

On Sunday, April 17, 2011, we started our drive northeast on the Natchez Trace Parkway. We made about ten stops on this day including a side trip to Vicksburg, MS where our first stop was the Old Vicksburg Court House where Jefferson Davis began his political career. We stayed that night in Starkville, MS near the campus of the Mississippi State University.

Slideshow Click or tap on the Slideshow button to view pictures without showing a map. This allows you to view the pictures even if you are using browser that does not support Google Earth maps.
Google Earth Application Click or tap on the Google Earth link to download the Google Earth map file. You can configure your browser to automatically open the Google Earth application. In the application, you can take a Virtual Tour, view photos, run the Slideshow, and access many more features.

[0:45] Stopping at a section of the original trail, the "Old Natchez Trace".
[1:21] Stopping at Mt. Locust, a historical building, now a museum. It was first established in the late 1700s as an inn on the old Trace, but when steamboat traffic transformed transportation, it became a successful cotton plantation
[2:26]The "Sunken Trace", another section of the Old Natchez Trace.
[3:08] Stopping at the old town of Rocky Springs, first settled in the late 1790s, grew from a watering place along the Natchez Trace, and took its name from the source of that water - the rocky springs.
[4:21] Taking a side trip to Vicksburg, MS our first stop was the Old Vicksburg Court House which is located on a knoll above the city streets. It was the spot where Jefferson Davis, a local planter, launched his political career in 1843.
[5:55] We toured the city which is located on the very defensible hills above the river.
[6:21] Returning to the Natchez trace at Clinton, MS.
[6:42] Stopping at another section of the Old Natchez Trace.
[6:42] Passing the very large Ross R. Barnett Reservoir.
[7:51] Exploring the Water Tupelo and Bald Cypress Swamp near Canton, MS. These trees can live in deep water for long periods
[8:34] At a beautiful nature trail near Thomastown, MS.
[9:57] Stopping at the Jeff Busby Park near Ackerman, MS. We enjoy a beautiful view from the summit overlook as dusk approaches.
[10:47] Leaving the parkway heading for the Hampton Inn in Starkville, MS, we drive past the campus of the Mississippi State University.
