Exploring Features on This Page

Map Click or tap on the Map link to scroll to the Google Earth map at the bottom of the page. You can follow the route, zoom in to view details, and zoom out see the entire area.
Photos While viewing a map, click or tap on a photo icon to show a larger thumbnail and a caption. Click on the thumbnail to view full size images in the slideshow starting with the selected image.
Guided Tour Click or tap in the Guided Tour list to start an animated Google Earth Virtual Tour at a point of interest. Google Earth flies over the track and, as you fly over photos, it pauses, zooms in, and opens a thumbnail. You control the Tour like a video player pausing wherever you want.
Slideshow Click or tap on the Slideshow button to view pictures without showing a map. This allows you to view the pictures even if you are using browser that does not support Google Earth maps.
Google Earth Application Click or tap on the Google Earth link to download the Google Earth map file. You can configure your browser to automatically open the Google Earth application. In the application, you can take a Virtual Tour, view photos, run the Slideshow, and access many more features.

I270 -- Starting down I270 from Frederick, MD. at about 8:00 AM. We traveled down I270 heading toward the Washington Beltway and then to the George Washington Parkway. Tour Counter 0:22.
Washington Beltway -- We join the Washington Beltway. Tour Counter 1:30.
George Washington Parkway -- We cross the Potomac River and turn on the George Washington Parkway. This is by far the most beautiful approach to city offering wonderful views of residential areas north of the city and the downtown bridges and monuments. Tour Counter 1:49.
The Chain Bridge -- We are on the George Washington Parkway passing the Chain Bridge. Tour Counter 2:01.
The Key Bridge -- We are passing the Key Bridge. Tour Counter 2:12.
The Roosevelt Bridge -- We are passing the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge. Tour Counter 2:14.
The 14'th Street Bridge -- We are passing the 14'th St. Bridge. Tour Counter 2:15.
Alexandria -- We begin to pass through Alexandria, VA. Tour Counter 2:30.
Arrival -- We arrive at Mount Vernon and visit the Visitor's Center. Tour Counter 3:14.
Museum -- We tour the Donald W. Reynolds Museum. The museum contains many interesting exhibits on Washington's life. Tour Counter 3:36.

My favorite was a set of computer generated impressions of his appearance as a young man. Most of the photos I took are skipped in the tour. You can view them my Pausing the tour and clicking on the fuzzy sphere icons just outside the building.

Approach to the Mansion -- I start a picture taking tour on foot. It starts with a walk toward the Mansion from the West. Tour Counter 4:29.
Lower Garden -- My path leads through the Lower Garden where Washington grew herbs and vegetables for the table. Tour Counter 4:42.
Front Lawn -- From the Lower Garden, I walked through the gate to the Front Lawn with a magnificent view of the Potomac River on the right and the Mansion on the left. Tour Counter 5:05.

I was able to get some nice photos of this spectacular area. I suggest that you Pause the tour, move around the area, and click on the photo icons. You can see an enlarged version of the photos by clicking on the balloons.

Formal Garden -- I proceeded past the front porch, the Overseer's quarters, and other outbuildings to the beautiful formal gardens. Tour Counter 6:15.
Lunch -- I joined our group for lunch. Tour Counter 7:00.
Washington's Tomb -- After lunch, I continued on my walking tour and visited Washington's tomb. Tour Counter 7:23.
Riverfront -- My path lead down to excursion boat pier and the nearby reproductions of the fields and barns on the plantation. Tour Counter 7:36.
Start Return -- I finally rejoined our group and boarded the bus for the return trip, which started about 3:30 PM. We retraced our route back to Frederick. Tour Counter 9:00.
