2009 - 2014: Frederick Community College ILR Trips

Presenting four albums that tell the story of trips sponsored by the ILR (Institute for Learning in Retirement) program at the Frederick Community College in Frederick, MD. The first is a field trip to French and Indian War Sites on September 25, 2009. It was led by Colonial Historian Roger Swartz. The second, which took place on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, was a visit to Monticello also lead by Roger Swartz. The itinerary included: a lecture by Roger on the topic: "The Enigmatic Mr. Jefferson and His Beloved Monticello; lunch at historic Michie tavern; and a tour of Monticello. The third, which took place November 13, 2013, was a visit to Cambridge, MD, home of Harriett Tubman, Conductor on the Underground Railroad. The itinerary included a stops at the Harriett Tubman museum, the "Stanley Institute", the oldest community owned one room school house in Dorchester County, a nearby country church, and a restored country store where Harriet Tubman acted to protect an accused runaway slave. The fourth, which took place October 9, 2014, featured a visit to Ft. McHenry in Baltimore, MD and included a lecture by Roger on the history and myths surrounding the creation of our national anthem. We also visited the Hampton Estates north of Baltimore, which was owned by Ridgley Family, which through multiple emterprises became one of the one the wealthiest families in America while remaining relatively unknown to most Americans.
